My son has got an invitation to a girl’s bithday party. She’ll be five and she loves carrying around her toy animals. So, what’s more useful for a little girl than a pink drawstring bag for transportation?
A while ago I saw Kristin Link’s bagmaking class on Craftsy. The drawstring bag she demonstrated there is really lovely for children and easy to make. I think the class and the platform are really good. Check out the Craftsy class and Kristin’s page, there is lots of instruction, many helpful tutorials and tons of inspiration!
I wanted to make a bag for my son to put in his sports utensils anyway, so I “undertook” making two identical bags.
I took fabrics from my stash, the girls fabric with the fairies is some Riley Blake FQ which I got at a sale, the pink calico is from my stash, I don’t remember the manufacturer, the white fabric with the lily print is Tilda and the purple is a re-purposed skirt (thanks to Bonnie Hunter for the idea!).
For the boy’s bag I took babyblue yardage, dots and icecream fabric (don’t remember the manufacturer) from my stash, some dots on white from Tilda and a 5″ square from a Lollipop Charm pack by Moda.
The girl’s bag went as planned, for the boy’s bag my son requested some changes and we swapped the blue solid with some orange solid from my scraps that goes well with the dots on the babyblue fabrics.

For the appliqué I used some fusible interfacing. Be careful here, you have to trace the letters mirrored onto the interfacing. Or your trace it rightwise onto the glued (bumpy) side of the interfacing in order to get mirrored letters on the outer side of the interfacing.

It took me about an hour to make both bags, including several instances of intensive sewing help from my sons. If you can work without breaks you should be able to finish one bag in about 20 minutes. They’re really fast and easy!
